It was first released in Japan in December 1997, and worldwide the following year.1 It was re-released on the Wii’s Virtual Console service in 2007,2 and later for the Wii U’s Virtual Console in 2016. This game is the one that made me love Yoshi. Yes, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Bro. Is good, but this game captured me and started me down the path of actually liking Yoshi. The game is fantastic from the music to the gameplay. An added bonus is that you get to choose which color Yoshi you wanted to.

OverviewHelp the baby-Yoshis to defeat Bowser Jr. and restore happiness in this side-scrolling platformer.

I didn't really enjoy the time I spent playing Yoshi's Story. The controls felt sloppy to me and the sound effects almost drove me crazy. There is a bit of charm to it, but I just wasn't feeling this game.

Bananahead rates this game: 4/5

This game is simply cute and charming, and brings me right back to my childhood. As an 18 year old this is basically a time consumer and a simple way to make time pass without having to really consentrate. I enjoy playing it because it reminds me about the happy N64-times. I would never play this game for any other reasons though, because it can be really annoying. Hah!
The game itself has a cute outline and is a simple kids game. Don't expect too much from it! :)

Final boss mlg. Passing up Yoshi's Story because it's too childish is even worse than passing Kirby's Epic Yarn. While it's gameplay may not be as good as Yoshi's island on the Snes and GBA, this game is still fun. It includes Yoshi's unique abilities such as stretching his tounge, ground pounds, flutter jumps, and egg making and throwing. Basically the story is of the Yoshis on the island find their Happy tree missing and suspect Baby Bowser of taking it so they go on an adventure. Not the best story, but it's just Yoshi, so I'm not complaining. You are going to see a lot of playing time as there are 8 worlds with 4 levels on each and not to mention trying to get a perfect score. Overall, the style may be a throw off, but the game still has great game content.

Remembering this game from my early gaming years, I downloaded it, expecting a lot. That was my first and only mistake. Yoshi's Story is a simple, yet entertaining game aimed at younger players, simple and easy gameplay, with very little to learn, and almost no need for stradegy. When I sit down to play it, it's usually only to pass time, though I have actually put many hours into this game, going for perfect ratings on every stage.
The plot of the game is that the Super Happy Tree was taken by Baby Bowser and so Yoshi and his friends (other coloured Yoshis) set out to find it.
Each stage can be completed by eating a certain number of fruit, and as mentioned before, it is very easy to do this. Once you eat enough fruit, simply head to the right and reach the end.
I would classify this game as a platformer, though many would disagree. Perhaps you will have your own opinion once you play it.

YoshiMystics Apprentice rates this game: 5/5

This game is just absolutely too cute to pass up, and wonderful for kids too!
The gameplay is really simple. You choose from several different colored yoshis and have 6 pages of courses to complete, but you only have to do one course on each page. The story is adorable as well. The Yoshi's are trying to find the super happy tree that had been taken by baby bowser, and during their quest they must eat as many fruits as they can found along to way to maintain happiness. So the object is to go through each course and eat about 30 fruits before you are able to move onto the next course.
It's a really fun, yet simple game without much need to have to strategize to continue. This is especially a wonderful game for children, but I think some teens and adults may get a thrill out of it too!

The beta version of Yoshi’s Island 64 (later called Yoshi’s Story) has some graphic differences, various minor changes in the level design and a removed “underground” level. This beta level had a black background, water and giant mushrooms, as well as some enemies that are bigger than the ones in the final game. The soil was covered with moss and we can notice huge flying bubbles that Yoshi was able to move.

Jose Felipe Riveros Navarro noticed that in the second beta video there are early Shy Guys that are smaller than the final ones, a beta version of the jungle hut stage at 0:06 – 0:07 and at 0.11 a “?” block is moving in a different way than the final version. In some images from the Yoshi’s Story japanese commercial there are some differences too: changed background, the colors of the “tall tower” and the sun, the heart is a little different from the final one.

Also in and old Japanese commercial about Yoshi’s Story, you’ll notice Yoshi had a different, more girlish voice (behind the 0:15 mark:). Of course, since this was the first game where Yoshi had an actual voice, he might have sounded a whole lot differently today. Thanks to Yosher for the contribution!
